Hi everyone. My name is Anna and I’m after a little help. I currently live in NZ (yup, those few islands half way round the world near Australia) and will be visiting Canada June/July this year. For a number of years I’ve had an interest in the culture of the native peoples of North America. While I don't know a lot about it, I would love to immerse myself in it and experience the customs and traditions that continue today as more than just a passing tourist by being part of a community (as much as an outsider can), for just a few weeks… and Dokis seems like a wonderful place to do this. I would love to help out the community in any way I can in exchange for a little hospitality and a willingness from the people to share their culture with a foreigner, in every sense of the word. If anyone thinks they could help me out in any way – info, advice, names and contacts – I would be hugely grateful. I would also love to hear from anyone that is willing to share with me their experiences of Dokis and the people within the community, whether you reside there permanently or just visit occasionally. My email is freezing_kiwi@hotmail.com or annap@nzwwa.org.nz Thanks heaps – looking forward to hearing from anyone and everyone!! Anna.

Aanii,
I'm looking to learn more about my ancestors. My great
grandmother(Brunette was her married name), I was told came
from the Dokis Nation and that she was Ojibwe. My
grandfather kept this information secret for reasons I
cannot be sure of. Although he had never told me about his
past, he talked alot about growing food, hunting, and
reading the weather. He gave me his small game bow when I
was eight.
I was born in Sudbury, Ontario, but I was moved to Alberta
when I was nine. I took every chance I got, when I was
young, to explore the forests where I lived(Hinton,
Alberta). Mostly I would just explore trails and follow
animal tracks.
I only found out about my ancestry in 2001, and I was very
proud to find out. I applied for my Metis status in Alberta,
because I was told that's all I'm recognized as. I got Metis
status for some sort of ancestoral recognition.
Now the Metis Nation of Alberta tells me that I may be able
to be recognized as Ojibwe. If this is true, I would very
much like to know who to speak with or where to go for
information.
I would very much appreciate it if you could tell me who I
could speak to or redirect my letter to someone who could
help me. I want to pass anything I learn about our ancestry
to my eight year old son.
Thanks,
Dennis Malbeuf

Hello, Everyone. Hope everyone had a good summer. I just wanted to
know if anyone had old snowshoes they don't want anymore. I am doing crafts with them. They don't have to be
a pair. I will take them even if the strapping and webbing are broke. Even if the frame is cracked. Please

Yukon Jack Restoule |
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to
take the opportunity to congratulate Chief Denise Restoule
and her Council on their response to our latest power outage
from July 17, to 21, 06. The meals that were provided
to all of our community members and the assistance we received
from our fellow
community members,
who gave their time in helping out at the community center
during those days, will be remembered and appreciated (I'm
sure someone kept a complete list of everyone who helped out).
It was good to see the people from Emergency Management Ontario
and the OPP (forgive me if I' ve forgotten your organization)
in our community to assist in bringing in supplies, water
and other necessary items. With everyone's help we showed
that Dokis Bay can still pull together even in the most trying
of times (despite what some people are saying). There
has been more than our share of negativity floating around
and the way we all pulled together during this time of community
need just goes to show that our community spirit is alive
and well. I am proud of Dokis Bay, I am proud to live in Dokis
Bay, I am proud that I belong here in Dokis Bay and this is
where my family and I call home.
In closing, I don't
want to forget the people at Hydro One for getting our power
back on as quickly as possible before too many people lost
what they had in their freezers and I don't want to forget
the people good enough to lend their generators to others
who didn't have one for their own homes during our latest
power outage. We can still pull together if we try.
Everyone deserves a pat on the back for helping out.
Again, thank you.

My name is Lindsay
Belanger and I lived in Dokis for a short period of time with
my grandparents Beverly Belanger and Romeo Belanger. I guess
I am just writing this message because I no longer have contact
with any of my family
there. I truely do miss having a relationship with my grandmother
Beverly. It really saddens me that I no longer have contact
with anyone. I thought they should know that I have a beautiful
and amazing baby girl named Summer
Romeo Belanger. She was born August 31 2004 and it really
hurt not being able to share my joy with my family. I decided
to use my grandfathers name for her middle name because even
in the short time I knew him I learned so
much from him and enjoyed every moment we had. I now live
in a small town outside of Toronto and I will be attended
Ryerson University in September, which to me is amazing concidering
no one thought I would ever make it and
completely gave up on me. I love my life right now and enjoy
my daughter, wonderful family and my job. I live on my own
with my daughter and fiance and we are doing great in our
new house. I do miss Dokis and my fathers side
of the family but I am glad they turned their backs on me
because it gave me the courage and determination to pursue
my dreams and accomplish my goals. I
hope everyone is still doing well and you can contact me at
any time

I guess thats all for now. I hope to hear from family or old

Doug Dokis |
Greetings, Dokis First Nation
I would like to take this opportunity to address all members
of the community at this most important time in our Nations
history. For many years now, I have been part of the community
from a distance, returning home yearly to enjoy what is the
most important place in my life. I grew up with many of you
both as a child, and now as friend, and hopefully, someone
who can offer something the community, watching, and listening
to the events within our community, that have been slowly
deteriorating and creating anger, resentment, and jealousy,
that is now finding it's way into the mindsets of our children.
I don't recall it being this way when I was a younger.
Certainly there were always differences, but they were handled
in a much more respectful way. For the most part, I have
reserved my comments on the day-to-day goings on at the reserve
because, as I see it, I am on the outside looking in, not
having to deal directly with outcomes of decisions made at
home. I do however, become extremely saddened when I
see the great potential of Dokis First Nation not being fully
utilized. In my opinion, this is just a reflection of
the greater social deterioration of Canadian society, particularly
in the Urban settings of which I have spent most of my life
living in. This is an environment that encourages competitive
lifestyles that really don't serve the greater good of society
as a whole. It is a "me first environment". The seasons
change, our environment changes, and so must we as people,
in order for us the create an environment that will be healthy
and free for the ones who will inherit our successes, and
struggle with our failures. I would like to thank
the outgoing leadership for all the incredibly difficult work you
have undertaken over the past years, and congratulate you
on your successes. I would also like to stress that success
does not come without challenges, it is those challenges,
and how we address them, that will determine how successful
we as a community, will be in the future.I would also like
to congratulate the incoming leadership, and wish you well
on the extremely important task that lies before you. As an
individual, we are limited to our own accumulative knowledge,
and experience, as a collective body, we can draw from the
incredibly vast experiences of all those around us, and those
that have come before us.I was once told that leadership is
not something that one should aspire too, but rather, to accept
with humility, dignity and respect for all those who not only
agree with with you, but more importantly, those that don't,
for it will be those who don't agree with you that will
play the most important role in addressing past, and future
challenges, which will ultimately become the tool by
which your success will be measured. As far as I can see from
the outside, with a limited view to the daily events of the
reserve, there has been great past leadership with many successes,
and unfulfilled challenges, and new leadership, that has the
potential to build on those successes, and address the unfulfilled
challenges that are becoming so apparent within the community.
I don't profess to have the answers for all unresolved differences,
however, I will say that for those of you who know me well,
you will know that I too come from a past lifestyle
that was not always walking in a way that speaks to
some of the values, and beliefs I address in this message.
Over the years, I have been witness to events, and individuals
who have contributed greatly to my understanding of what our
potential as Aboriginal people can truly be. I have also been
witness too, and been actively involved with those in
a political arena, who's number one goal is to completely
assimilate First Nations People, removing us from our lands,
lifestyle and worldviews. This is the true challenge before
us, and it will take the collective efforts of all Nation
members, to ensure that through our own reconciliation and
healing processes, there is something positive for our children
to thank us for. I therefore, would like to thank the Nation
for all it has done for me, and my family, and extend my utmost
gratitude and feelings of pride I have in being a member of
Dokis First Nation. I truly count the days each year until
I come home in June, and wish you all well in your future
endeavors.
Chi MeegWetch,
Respectfully, in friendship from Calgary |

Hello all
Congratulations to
all of the newly elected leaders who will represent the Dokis
First Nation. I have a question for anyone who may be interested
in replying. I am getting married on September 9, 2006 and
am wondering if any of you have any ideas/traditions that
could be incorporated into the ceremony (i.e., prayers, sayings,
teaching, etc). I realize that some of these may be personal,
but if anyone feels comfortable in sharing, please do. I am
the grand-daughter of the late Jesse Dokis and the daughter
of Bruce Dokis who died in 1978. Again, if anyone has anything
to share, it would be greatly appreciated. All the best!

I would just like to Congratulate the newly elected Chief
and council, and re-elected councillors. Over
the history of our First Nation choosing a leader has always
been a choice that was given to the members. And as we have
seen in our past, choosing new people to be leaders in our community
definitely brings with it new ideas. The past council has achieved
many goals, and we as the people should respect and Thank
them very much for their dedication and great achievements.
Thank you, Meegwetch |

I am sorry to see you go, except Bud - Congrats! - your
work and effort was appreciated. When I come home a

It's a path that should be followed by the new "Chief

the wheel." Don't go back, you've been there; go forward
with the best interest/welfare of ALL the community in mind.

Leadership
Indian leaders were
chosen by their deeds and the manner in which they acted towards
their people, their generosity and their willingness to serve
their people above all else. They were there to guide their
people but weren't there to rule the people. Our people didn't
understand the theory of dictatorship. Our people lived in
harmony and as equals. We were taught to have respect for
all things and be respectful to all beings on this earth.

Hi Lorie,
It's nice to hear from you. I just wanted to quickly respond
to your message. I read that you pray to the creator and that
is very good because everyone needs guidence, but also I once
had a teacher who said to me that the best way to make positive
changes is to wake up every day and make a few goals on how
to change the lives of those around you and for those that
need your help. It heals your soul. Sometimes, people need
to be heard or helped and when they are, the favor is then
turned toward someone else because a caring heart has
come their way from you. It's a never ending cycle. It can
also be like that for negative effects, but only you have
the power to change that. I also agree that the elections
are coming and my personal opinion is that change is good
because other people have different mindsets and that will
always make things evolve to where it should be. I don't think
people are jealous but there are people who are hurt. Sometimes
when an idea has been dealt with by one party it becomes a
little stagnent. It's like brushing your teeth! Sometimes
we get too tired to do the 30 second brushing!!! I once had
a nurse who told me that! Good luck and I will talk to you
soon! |

It's nice to hear
such positive things from someone you haven't heard from in
a long time. Michelle was one of my truly best friends
growing up in Dokis. Michelle it's nice to hear from
you. I hope things are good with you and your family.
I agree with everything you have said, there is a time
to let the hatred and anger go so that we can live a peaceful,
happy life. I lay my tobacco every morning and pray
to the Creator to help me through each day that seems to bring
more and more hurt. At this time, because of elections,
rumors and untruths are getting out of control. I
hear the things being said about me, things are not even close
to being true. All in the name of what's best for Dokis,
supposedly. I hope that everyone out there knows enough
not to believe everything you hear (especially at this time)
and question the source when you do hear things. I can
honestly say that I am doing the best job I possibly can and
I pray that the people of Dokis will find a way to end this
terrible fighting.
Michelle, it would
be nice to talk to you again. E-mail me at young_forestry@efni.com
and we'll catch up.

Michelle Dokis O'brien |
Hello! My name is Michelle Dokis O'brien. I lived on
the reserve while I was growing up and we then settled in
Rockwood On. after the death of my father so that my mother
could raise her three children and work for her living. My
brothers are Sandy and Lee Dokis. My father 'Chief Wilfred
Dokis' died in 1979. His father was Alex Dokis. My great,
great grandfather was Cheif Michael Dokis. (as you can see
in the picture with my uncle George) I just wanted to put
some thoughts out there for you. I know that as a people we
are just a small band that maybe the world doesn't see
or pay attention to. But as a people who make up this band
we should all try to get along and to love one another for
when it comes right down to it ....we are all that we have
in this world. You cannot take the material things with you,
so open your heart and your arms and embrace your people and
"the organization". Share your love and your fortune with
those that are around you. Try to remenber when you have done
something that wasn't so right and do something to make it
right. I promise that it will make your heart sing and you
will be loved by those around you and praised when you enter
the spirit world for your name will always be in people's
hearts. Take a look at your ancestors...That is what makes
us a band of people. |

My hat goes off to Dorian Beauvais on her well said comments.
People who choose to live in anger and jealousy will never
find their inner peace, within themselves or with any other
living creature. Beautifully said, It makes me proud to see
that others feel alive with spirit ,sometimes it takes years
of wisdom, and learning to reach this level of understanding.

This message is for Lisa Restoule........ Your a very lucky
person to wake up each day with a positive outlook, bitterness
and anger consumes alot of time and energy not to mention the
stress it can do to your soul.. it is easier to smile than it
is to frown all day. Everyone's time on this earth is different
and the time wasted on
negative feelings is wasted time..If more people woke up to
the light
of day with a positive attitude than maybe dokis bay would live
in
harmony instead of anger and bitterness |

Hi to everyone, especially to the people who visit and
use this convienent means of communication to one another.
As a concerned and mostly silent "Band Member", because I
was never really one for Politics and all it's drama and "
Hoopla". I reside in Sudbury and have done
so for almost 17yrs. Fortunately I grew up on The "Rez",
and yes most of my Aunts and Uncles and cousins and some of
my childhood best buddies still live in this beautiful
community. They do so I believe, because they care, they care
in developing a community where their children and their future
grandchildren can be proud to walk in a land that has
served the past generations and generations before. You see not
everyone is concerned about Politics and which person is running
for "CHIEF", or council. There are people who are just
there because this is their home, and this was their
Fathers, or their Mothers home. This is a place where time
can almost stand still, a place to stand alone, or a place
to stand beside many, there is laughter and there is sorrow,
there is peace and there is disagreement .. And yes it's even
a place where you can if you choose to do so, throw
your name in the hat to run for council. There are many
reasons to LOVE Dokis, and to some there are many
obvious reasons not too. The article in the Newspaper
didn't help anyone, but it put words on a page and in doing
so hurt the very goodness that is in all of us. It hurt the
integrity that our Native people have been trying to build
and establish for First Nations, it changed the way that
Non native people look at us, and our ability to self govern
ourselves. People must realize that the media will jump on
these chances to make us look wrong and undignified. You see
this protest and the article wasn't about how buisness and
Band affairs are being handled, to me it was someones cry
for attention and to speak aloud, which is everyone's right to
do so.My advice and words to the people who protested. And
if anyone chooses to Qoute me on this can very well do so.
To the people of Dokis, and to all the Chiefs and Chiefs before
them, to the Grandfathers and Grandmothers who have struggled
to grow and raise their families in this place called home.
Never let anyone take away your dignity with the power of
their words, never loose focus of our goals to become better
people, "Don't let the past dictate who you are, but let it
be part of who you become" "It's never too late to make things
Right" |

Mark Restoule |
"Wow!!!! Must be election year!!!!! I've read the
articles from both the Sudbury Star and the North Bay Nugget
and IS THIS the very worst that has transpired this term????
I have always believed that our Band Council represented
the "Voice of the People" heard on election day. I will not
decry the system's integrity, nor the voters' commitment
to our community's welfare. I cannot subscribe to any theory
of "family conspiracy". Let's give our heads a shake.
I have full confidence that our electorate are wise enough
to see through the sour grapes and support our Council's pro-active
efforts to curb the abuse of community goodwill.
I am not worried for the few individuals who may feel hard
done by because I know, unequivocally, that Council would
never stand by and willfully allow them to suffer beyond their
capacity. As parents, we know this as "tough love".
I remember for years how we had cried for and tried to
create a housing policy with teeth that would serve us well.
We wanted housing that was adequate for our needs, allocated
through a fair and transparent selective processes,
and where and when possible, would provide a financial return
on the community's investment to ensure our future needs would
be met.
We must continue on this path of "Community Minded"
self-suffiency. We must leave our personal agenda aside. We
must stand up for our community because I can assure you,
our community will NEVER let us down. NEVER.
Through it all, since time immemorial, we in DOKIS have
always been FAMILY and will always be FAMILY to one another.
You know, sometimes our blindness does not allow our minds to
feel what our hearts are seeing.
It is like when the child, in a fit of anger, blurts out
to his parent, "I hate you". There are many ways for a parent
to respond. Some will be hurt, some will be angry, and some
will just shut down. Some may even re-act in anger and regret
will soon follow. But, if we can trust our heart, we will
see that the child actually "hates" the action that was taken
against him/her and in their blindness are lashing out
at whom they perceive to be the author of their misfortune.
At a time like this, it will not serve us to get into
a "pi**ing" contest, as parents we would be better off to feel
their anguish, find a way to empathize with their frustration, partner
up to resolve the issue in a mutually satisfying manner, and
above all else, to see this as an opportunity to incur growth
and strengthen the bonds of the family ties.
Let us all agree to see our community as family and
in doing so, to accept our role as adults and strive to be
the best parents for our future generations.

RE: Fight for Rights
My name is Cindy Restoule, daughter of Geno & Anita.
I have only had the chance to glance at the article in the Sudbury
Star regarding the protest in Dokis lately. My only comment
at this time is this: There are only two reasons people "scream"
to be heard.
They either scream out of joy, or they scream out of fear. So
my question to those who protested, why are you screaming?
I am the first one to scream out of fear, I do not adapt to
change easily but change is inevitable.
Educate yourself, involve yourself in the process and research
the reasons for the change.
Then, you will be better prepared for the "new" changes...whether
you like it or not.

The recent article
in the local newspapers casts a grey cloud over the First
Nations. For decades the First Nations people have worked
hard to dispel the stereo typing of people who cannot take
care of them selves or expect things for free. The unfortunate
thing is that journalistic bounds were neglected in order
to get a story in print before investigating the facts to
half a story that was put out. Those who live in this beautiful
community know what's, what and who's who. As for the community
of Dokis, positive things have evolved over the past decade
and any intelligent individual(s) would certainly have to
agree that changes are eventually going to happen. Improvements
to our health, education, and infrastructure and of course
housing took on a face-lift, which is one of many baby steps
to becoming self-sufficient.
Our children and future generations to come would most certainly
appreciate a positive and prosperous life, not a heritage tainted
by ignorance. |

Hi Norm and Estelle Dokis:
Several years ago, friends and I came north and rented
boats and cabins on the French River. We never had so
much fun before. We are looking forward to a spring
trip to Norm's cabins, but we need to know how to get hold
of you. We'd love to rent a cabin. Can you send
us information about renting a cabin? We'll be bringing
our own boat. We're looking at the last week of May
or first week of June to come up .
I don't have internet access, so would you please
respond to my friend Jack Werle at foundtele@aol.com
? Or you can call me at 513-330-3069.
Thanks for your help! |

My name is mike:
I am looking for anyone who might remember my grand mother
and grandfather. My grand father was Charles Restoule
born about 1893/ 96 and my grand mother was May or Mary Dokis
born about the same time. They were never married,
Charles left the Dokis reserve and went to war in 1917 and
surrendered his status to fight for Canada. May or Mary as
she was known had two kids that she had to give up to a shoe
maker named Mr. Moulding in Larder lake.I
quess the great depression hit them pretty hard and they gave
the kids to Moulding because he was white and had a little
money to raise them. Moulding was an Englishman from Wales.
Charles Restoulle left May with the kids and
didn't come back to the reserve until the kids had already
been given up. I dont' know what happened to Charles and May
after that . I would like to know if they every married and
had other kids. My mom was one of the kids
given to the Moulding Family ( a white family)in Larder Lake.
She was born in 1926 and I think her name was Lisabeth or
Isabelle Restoulle as well but the Mouldings changed it to
Evelyn.
Oddly enough May Dokis may have worked in Grangers Hotel in
Larder. A picture of my grandmom is attached, she is the third
one to the right. It is taken out front of Grangers Hotel
in Larder lake. I think she tried to stay close to her kids
even though she had given them up I am trying to find my relatives
, many of whom may be in Dokis still. If you can help , or
this sounds like your relative please E mail me at mikedian@telusplanet.net

Greetings,
I am a
long-time cottager from the West Bay who is interested in
the history of the Dokis Band (not
genealogy
, more political/social history). I have just finished
Schultz ' History of the Ojibwas in Southern Ontario ,
and am starting History of the Georgian
Bay Lumber Company , in which chief Michael Dokis is a
hero. Several messages on this board mention that
someone
in the Band may be compiling a history. I would like
to correspond with that person.
Will try
to come to the pow-wow with my family this year. |

A poem for Lynn Restoule, the Wife of Ivan and Brother
of Donna....
When
We Hurt
Our
souls can never seem to find their place Because we are lost
in the turmoil of this worlds disgrace
Shadows
of tomorrows wants and needs Fill us with only shallow seeds.
She
is gone and no one seemed to notice tomorrow's choice
Amazing
how selfish we caught up in our own voice. So we will learn
from our lost love And find peace on the wings of a dove.
Lynn
will be missed for her forward repose We will find a special
song in our hearts to compose Incredible language and straight
forward style She always was there to send on a smile.
A
patch on her eye like a pirate's zeal She made fit and ready
and was always an appeal Standing on a soap box and ready
to crash
She
wasn't worried about the need for some cash.
We
will miss you Lynn and treasure the past Somehow we assumed
forever you would last.
But
your life lives on in our hearts at this time. Remembering
the times when all was just fine.
God
and our grandfather's gifts of life Come with the entrees
of grief and strife We know that now and forever will be The
courage you gave us and set us free.
You
have a special place in our hearts Just like heaven, God has
never been apart His forgiveness has bless you and stronger
we be
His eyes will glow for all to see.

Hi
Everyone... I just wanted to let everyone know that my presentation
at CAGONT was a total success (A JOB WELL DONE). Dan
came along to encourage and support me during my presentation
(I was the first one at 8:30 am
). I would like to say that
our community should be very proud for all the accomplishments
that Dokis has done with the forestry sector and that Dokis could
be model for other reserves to follow.... Rikk I would
like to say that you are doing an excellent job and Thanks
again to everyone who has supported me.
There is talk now about CAG (Canadian Association of Geographers
"National") held in Thunder Bay
in May 2006, but we will have
to see and I will keep you updated. |

I would like to see a motion brought forward to the Dokis
Band Council to name our Pow Wow Grounds. My suggestion would
be to name it after our own Robert Donald Dokis Jr. who was
taken from us while honoring our
grandfathers and following the call of his heart's dream. Imagine
looking up our attractions on this web site and instead of reading
"Pow Wow Grounds" we would see something like "THE
ROBBIE DOKIS POW WOW GROUNDS" or even, "THE MORNING-STAR
GROUNDS".
We all knew Robbie and I for one know how much he loved Dokis
Bay. He taught me more about who I was and where I had come
from than anyone else. For me, there is NOT a day that goes
by that I do not mourn my loss and ask Morning-Star to guide
my day so I can be a better person. |

Hi, I have been seeking the Sawyer family that is related
to my grandfather. All I have is Louie Sawyer b. abt 1788
married to Marie Sague,?Leger, in the early 1800's. They lived
in Hogansburg, N.Y. on the reservation, in fact they built
there homestead there. I have all the Sawyer lines from abt
1824 on up but nothing back into the 1700's. To complicate
it further they both Louie and Mary Sawyer listed where they
were from as Canada E. I have recently been sent info. that
they were born Ill de Montreal? Louie had a brother John who
lived next door to him. Any info. would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you |

Hi everyone...
I am writing to say Thank you to everyone who supported
me and my research project for my directive studies at Nipissing
University. I would like to say that "it is finally
done" and that I will presenting this project at CAGONT (Canadian
Geographers of Ontario Conference) in Ottawa at the end
of October. This project has been a learning experience
for me and my supervising professors at the University.
I would like to send a special thank you to Rick Restoule,
Forestry Technician for allowing me to review historical records,
assisting in data collection, providing maps and any other
information I may have needed, without your help this project
may have not been completed. Finally I would like to
thank Dan, family and friends for their continued support
and encouragement. To all of you I am forever thankful. |

Jeanette Koch (Dokis) |
My name is Jeannette. I moved away from Dokis Bay in
1955 when my father Edward Dokis drowned in Lake Nipissing.
Shortly afterwards my mother,ne Jeannette Lariviere moved
us to Sturgeon Falls. Unfortunately for my sister Judy,my
younger brother Larry, and myself, we lost touch with our
relatives in Dokis Bay,the most beautiful place in the world.
Happily,I can keep in touch through the Anishnabek News.
I am so pleased to see the younger generation getting their
education and moving ahead in their lives. It is strange
to read about relatives i have not met,but I sense the spirit
of our ancestors talking. I particularly felt it in my
cousin Norman Dokis. He reminded me so much of my grandfather
Frank Dokis. As a child still living on the "Res",I vividly
remember him waving his arms and pointing towards the road
to these white
people who were trying to get water from his well.Yes,he
was a feisty Chief and I hope there are more leaders like
him. The last time I visited Dokis Bay in 1996,I was so happy
to see a few relatives and especially my half sister Angeline.
We were not raised together so we hardly knew each other
and in our conversation she asked me "why am I the way I am"?.
This question puzzled me for a few seconds till I realized
that she did not know our Father! But I did. So I explained
to
her that he had the same mannerisms in the way he expressed
himself. My son Gerry by the way has the same way about
himself. Now the
main purpose of this letter was to introduce myself and
yes I am probably related to you too. Also through a previous
conversation a
few years ago I was told there was a local historian who
has information about our ancestors. It has been many years
of living away from my people through no fault of our own. In
a way we have been victims of the
Federal Government also.We were promised compensation for
losing our "Indian Status" when my mother married a
"White Man"That happened in 1956. It is now 2005 and again
the so called government of Canada besides lying and stealing
from us the First Nations people, actually think they are
getting away with the evil they did to us. If I can get the
information from you about our genealogy I will be able to
write about what happened in my journey to get this compensation.
THEY cannot get away with what THEY have done to US. I have
all the proof, the original documents from Indian affairs, the
correspondence from lawyers that I hired to look into these
matters.
The blood of chiefs run in my blood and the truth will
be my weapon .We have lived like Jews in exile in our
own country. I now currently live on Vancouver Island
in Courtenay B.C. and own operate ROSEWALL SIGNS
((250) 338-4550) along with my son GERRY. As far as I know
we are the first and only First Nation owned sign business
in Canada and we wish eventually to train First Nation persons
in this this trade. You are so fortunate to live in such a
beautiful area. There are so many good memories I would
like to share with people about Dokis Bay.It has been
a long, long time. I also have many photographs and journals
to show people. Yes we need to know our ancestors and
pass on this knowledge.By writing my story of exile I always
remember also my
brother Reno and what he wished to accomplish for his people. The
last time we spoke was in Vancouver and one day a phone
call informed me of his death.Who is continuing his dream?
Thank you for your help, |

I just wanted to relay a couple of messages to the community
and its fine members, one being a big congratulations to
Norm Jr. Dokis in his quest to becoming a full timer at
the North Bay District Ministry of Natural Resources. This
is certainly his area of expertise and his driving
force will be his passion to bridge the gaps between
cultures and the issues that tag along with them.
Recently our Chief & Council resolved an issue which
lingered since the founding of Dokis. That being the
land which lies between the two Dokis land bases. In
talks with the Minister of Natural Resources David Ramsey,
Chief Bill Restoule along with Councilors Leonard Dokis
and Derek Restoule managed to come to an agreement which
will allow the a section of mother earth to connect
our lands back together. I know for people who have never
been to this community might think well what's the big deal.
The list of headaches can go on for ever but in a nut shell
"what we could and couldn't do". It took 155 years
to weed out that problematic area and for that two
thumbs up and I'm sure the future generations to come will
have you to thank.

Good afternoon!
I was looking at your Website and it is quite interesting
and very well organized. At our French River Metis Tribe
1st Annual Rendez-Vous of August 28th, Mary Dokis was with
us representing elders. Thanks goes to chief Bill
Restoule and Mary Dokis for their participation which made
our day a success. Mary told us about a course in Ojibway

language. As it started yet and if not,
when is it going to start ? Hope to hear from you soon.

Hello,
My mother was a Restoule and I would like to find out how
she/we fit into the Dokis Nation. Family heritage etc.
if possible. My Grandfather on my mothers side of the
family was George Restoule of Nipissing Village.....my Grandmother
was Florence Restoule also of Nipissing Village. My
mother was Lillian Anne Restoule (McConnell) and she had 6
siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated.......if
you would please send to my private email address: wmcconnell@direcway.com
you may cc: my government email if you would just
so I know to check the other one.... Also, I and some of my
siblings are registered with the Indian Nation in Canada,
I believe we were the last generation to be able to do this.
Our children have not been able to register......can that
be corrected?? Thanks so much. |

I would like to extend
a Chi-Miigwetch to all who participated in our first Anishinabemowin
Gathering. It was a huge success with over 50 people
participating. I would also like to thank Chief &
Council for allowing staff to attend this very important gathering,
and to the instructors Mary Dokis, Marie Dokis, Liz Osawamick,
Girard Sagassige and Larry McLeod for leading the way to bringing
our language back. I had great help in making this gathering
the success, miigwetch to Don and Veronica Chartrand; Brian
Young; Teresa Restoule; Verna Polson; Renee Restoule &
Luc Gagnon; Bev Restoule; Lisa Restoule; Claudine Restoule
and last but not least Sara Gammon. I am very grateful to
have such support. I am happy to say this first of many gatherings
has provided a great step forward for our Band members to
learn our language. For band members who didn't have
the chance to attend this year's gathering, we will be planning
another one for next summer. I will post the event on
the web, so keep checking on this. For those who did
attend I encourage you to continue learning the language in
any way you can. We are planning evening course at the
school for those interested. Once again miigwetch to
everyone who made this event the success it was. |

Chief Restoule,
On behalf of the Canadian Ecology Centre I thank Dokis
First Nation and Gerry Duquette for their hospitality on Wednesday,
July 20.
Your community centre is outstanding. It was one
of the finest facilities we have trained within. The
warm greeting and departure by Councillor Leonard Dokis was
appreciated. It was a very enjoyable day. Thanks
to Gerry for all his organizing...he will utilize the training
for many reasons and the community will benefit.
I have been to Dokis many times as I have known Gord Restoule
for a long time.
We hope Gerry will train you and others...and we will return.
At the same time we have asked for a reference letter this
will help the Canadian Ecology Centre with extending their
training to others. |

Lisa, I just stumbled across this web site and was amazed

name is Pietrow. I remember many fun times at Dokis

much time Lana & I spent on the reserve and how at home
you all made us feel there. I live with my husband in

years in Barrie. My mom still lives in Sudbury, my dad
passed away in 1999. Send me a note at lisa.pietrow@gwl.ca
if you want to talk about the old days! P.S. its
very exicting to hear you've had a family - congratulations!!
Neither Lana or I have any children...must be survival of

Best wishes to all. |

Good Day!!! I'm just responding to the message that Debbie
Lafrance is asking. If all Sawyer's are native in Ontario and
if all Giroux are native in Quebec and Ontario. I might
be able to answer your question or point you to the right
direction. "Most" Sawyer's in the North Bay, Ontario
area are native. As well in the area of Rama,
Ontario. As for the Giroux's I don't know. It's a good question.
It's hard to say really, it's like asking if all Smith's living
in Ontario are Caucasian or African Canadian decent.
Why do you ask? I'm curious to know. I might be able to
help you out some more. I would have e-mailed you personally
but I don't give my e-mail address out, just to anyone, I
apologize!!! Miigwech |

Aaniin, To All!!! Since this website has been up and running,
I haven't lefted a message on the Message Board. So here it
goes. I must say that this Website is Amazing! It's great to
see how "My Home away from Home" is representing itself on the
World Wide Web. So now when I'm thinking and wishing of
being in "Dok", places like the first bridge or Restoule
River. I'm only one "Click" away. Great Job on the website.
Can't wait to see you all this Summer. |

have only recently learned that I may have ancestors
who were part of what is now the Dokis
Band. The facts are these: My great, great,
great grandparents were Etienne Delamorandiere
and Sai-Sai-Go-No-Kwe, the founders of Killarney, ON.
Their son, Alexis, married a woman
I know only as Mile L'Aigle in 1829. She was
reportedly from the Nipissing area. After having two
daughters, Adelaide and Pauline, Mile L'Aigle died in 1834.
The girls were raised by their
grandparents. Pauline, b. 1830 in Killarney, married
Daniel Plummer and they migrated to the
USA. Alexis Delamorandiere married for a second time-to
Angelique Hughes.
Recently, I have learned Mile L'Aigle may be related (sister)
of the first Dokis Chief, Micheal
Dokis. I wonder if anyone reading this message board
can confirm that relationship or
tell me who to contact who may have knowledge of this family
history. I have heard that
someone in the Dokis Band may be preparing a history of
the Band. Can anyone tell me
how to contact that person?

Hi, I would like to commend the Dokis Forestry for their
work and ideas on combing forces with the Economic Development
Office. I have seen so much success for First Nations (through
my position) when they combine their forestry departments with
economic development corporations. A First Nation forestry program
and plan will offer a paved road for success. |

Happy New Year to everyone in Dokis. I was so looking
forward to my very first Xmas and New Years there but unfortunately
circumstances have kept me away for this holiday season.
As most of you have heard Roland Armitage is in the hospital
with serious head injuries. We don't know the full extent
of damage to the brain or if there'll be any, at this point
it's just a waiting game for us all. This is day
15 and we are hoping that he will be able to wake up soon.
Carol and the boys appreciate everyone's concerns and well
wishes and we know that everyone is thinking positive
thoughts for Roland's full recovery. |

Happy New Year to all in Dokis! May this New Year
bring a brighter light of faith hope and love to you all.
Some day I would like to come back to Dokis and finish my
project on this history of the land. The land
speaks of great stories that need to be told. The young
people of today need to hear and feel the hearts of Grandfather.
Love to all... |

Hello:
I'm looking for a particular Map that my Mother bought
at the Trading Post about 20 years ago. I have looked at the
Trading post and a few other places in North bay and Sturgeon
falls. The map that she bought was lent out to a friend and
it was damaged by water. Some of the markings on it are still
clear enough to help in a description. The markings are as
follows.
French River from Little Chaudie Dam to Lake Nipissing
Bottom Right corner of Map MT8.0 FRS - 7
On the left side: Dokis Indian Reserve No 9
Huron ------unable to read------ Treaty 1850. This map
shows many of the schoals in detail along with the navigation
markers.
I've tried the Ontario Northern Affairs website and have
had no luck. I'm hoping that someone on the reserve would
have an identical map and would be able to sell it to me, or
photo copy it for me for a fee. I'm trying to get it for my
father for a Christmas present as he has said many times before
that he would like that map restored if its possible in memory
of my mother.

Hi Everyone in the Dokis Band. I am trying to find
information on my ggg grandmother, Marguerite SHAGOCOUI, she
married a Edouard Boisvert. They also had a son, Edward, born
in 1835. Catherine their daughter married a Francis Tessier,
aka Frank Tacy, Tacey, Teaxier She apparently was a member
of the Dokis? I would like to find out who her mother and

the Dokis First Nations. I have not been back since my mother's
memorial. You may rember her as Angele(Dokis) Barrieau. I
am working on my family tree. The only names mother mentioned
were Dokis, Restoule and Larviere. I appreciate any help you
can give me. I am also interested in the clan system for our
chippewa culture on the Dokis First Nations. I belong to the
